Cakes and Pies and Muffins, Oh My!

    By Marion Wilkinson | November 6, 2009

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed at the thought of making homemade desserts and treats for your family? Of course you do, we all do. With proper planning and preparation you can wipe that feeling away.

This is a great time of year to bake. The weather is getting cooler and your home is closed up against the cold. Having the aroma of fresh baked treats in the house will be a welcome addition. You’ll be a big hit with your family and any friends that just “happen” to stop in for a visit.

With the winter months coming, there will be planned and unplanned visitors coming to your home for the holidays. Now is the time to start preparing for these events. Find recipes that freeze well and take a weekend to do your baking.

If you love to bake, plan on making that very special dessert when you need it. Pre-baking is best when you use easy recipes that freeze well. Pies are great for this. Layer cakes are also very easy since you can bake them and freeze them before frosting. They stay moist and will hold up for a month or more. Be sure to wrap your treats tightly in foil and if you want, store them in a zipper bag for added protection.

Breads are another option for pre-holiday baking. Mix up and bake some of your favorites like pumpkin bread, banana bread or even corn bread. These freeze well and are a welcome addition to breakfast for your overnight guests. You can also make these bread recipes into muffins and freeze them individually, taking out only what you need each time.

In order to keep the expenses of baking from killing your budget in one week, start watching the weekly grocery ads for baking supplies that are one sale. Stock up on flour, sugar, butter, etc. when the store is marking the price down, this will save you lots of money. Most stores offer a buy one get one, take advantage of this if you can.

Making your life simpler around the holidays or just about any time of the year is what it’s all about. Your family will love the taste of these homemade treats and you’ll feel satisfied knowing that you made them yourself. Have fun baking!
