Acai berry is new to the supplement industry. Acai fruit is often made into acai juice or freeze dried into powder or made into capsules. The local natives and population has been using this as a beverage and for recipes for years. The flavor is pleasing and you may find that adding it to recipes can add a unique flavor. Adding freeze dried powder to yogurt or smoothie is a treat giving it a flavor similar to blueberry’s with a touch of chocolate.

The natives of the Amazon rain forest have been using acai berries for thousands of years as a dietary staple. These remarkable little purple berries look similar to blueberries or purple grapes and are harvested off of a palm that grows in swampy floodplains.

These berries are one of the highest ORAC value super foods available. With all the buzz it is no wonder there is a shortage and it can be hard to find in local health food stores and prices are expected to increase due to availability.

People who can benefit from acai berry supplements or freeze dried powder are athletes and the health conscious or people dealing with various illnesses. Trainers are starting to realize the importance of such a superfood and many athletes and trainers are discovering and using acai berry products for energy and stamina.

Health properties that people seek from acai berry products are antibacterial, anti inflammatory, antioxidant and for immune function. Many conditions the a person may use this product for are to lose weight, detoxing and cleansing, blood pressure, heart ailments, to reduce bad cholesterol, inflammation, arthritis, dry skin and other skin related problems.

Can acai berries be so beneficial? Loaded with protein and fiber and boasting such minerals as phosphorus, calcium and iron. You will also find that they have a few B vitamins, vitamin C and E and include a few of the essential fatty acid that based on research help control cholesterol levels, try finding that in a fruit product. A few products add extenders or mix it with cheaper juices such as blueberry, grape or pomegranate but you can do it yourself and save money.

Wholesome acai products come in many forms. You can usually get these acai berry products in capsules, or powder forms. The most common form is acai puree.
Wholesome acai products come in many forms. You can usually get these acai berry products in capsules, or powder forms. The most common form is acai puree. Acai berry products are one of natures outstanding supplements to hit the market in the last couple years.

The taste of acai berries is similar to blueberries with a subtle hint of cinnamon. The powder normally combines with yogurt or smoothies. Acai powder or puree mixes well with other juices like grape, pomegranate or blueberry. Acai puree mixed with other fruit juices makes a invigorating energy drink.

Acai berries has one of the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). This is a measure of antioxidant capacity of supplements or foods. Acai is higher than blueberries and pomegranates. Pure acai products should contain no fillers of course some will add organic sugar and boast a 100% organic product. If your acai berry product has added refined sugars or fillers that may be the reason it is such a good deal. Guarana is a sugar, stimulant and is sometimes utilized as a filler in acai products so that is something else to look at on the label.

Pure acai berry products have many benefits and are rich with protein, fiber, potassium and A and C vitamins. The other impressive property this berry has it it also possesses essential fatty acids Omegas 3, 6 and 9 these good fats are essential for the overall health of our body. Acai products such as juice, powder or capsules are one of the highest antioxidants that also have omegas 3, 6 and 9 which is quite remarkable for a berry product.

If you are reviewing pure acai products or if you are on an acai berry diet consider products that do not contain sugar. If you are diabetic or need to avoid sugar due to inflammation you need pure acai products not ones that are loaded with sugar or fillers. You need a product that is kosher and certified Brazilian acai berry and it should be processed and refined at the source. The best acai berry products are 100% organic and USDA certified.

Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan is an exciting new initiative in the Grand Traverse area. The mission of Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan is the collection and re-distribution of soon-to-expire fresh foods from available sources (e.g. grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, bakeries, etc.) to people in need through the area’s food pantries, shelters and community meals programs.

Our new “Food to the Rescue Cookbook” will help fund the program and put more food on the tables of hungry Northwest Michigan families.

The Cookbook is a collection of recipes contributed by: The People; Local Celebrities; and Local Chefs.

This Is Where You Can Help!

You are invited to submit a recipe that you enjoy at home with family and friends. A salad, soup, entrée, appetizer or dessert – something the less experienced cook would get great pleasure in preparing. An anecdotal story along with the recipe would be a plus.

Your participation will contribute immensely to the success of our Cookbook.
