By Kristaria Dawson | January 19, 2010
Did you know that you can brew your own beer? You could have already known that this was possible, but if you didn’t, you need to familiarize yourself with this activity! Not only will you be proud of yourself when you are home brewing beer, but you may find that you save a lot of money from doing it yourself rather than going to the bar. You may even find that it tastes better than the pricey manufactured brands in the liquor store.
Fermentation is used in the process of home brewing beer. You can make your own beer as a hobby that you enjoy, for your on personal consumption, or even for tasting and comparing with your friends. If you are new to this sort of activity, it is recommended that you search for exact home brew instructions online from people who have already done this sort of home brewing beer themselves. The process you use to brew your own beer is an exacting thing; one misstep and you can greatly affect the flavor of your resulting beer. Because of this, you need to take precautions in each step of the process and keep all tools that you use sanitary.
First, you have to know your homebrew recipes. These ingredients are not so hard to find. In fact, they can be found in kits and you can buy them in the nearest market available. Sometimes these kits come with certain equipments for a certain price. Equipments that you will in turn use to brew your raw materials.
Below is a list of the most common ingredients used when you brew your own beer:
- Water
- Malt extract (either liquid or dried)
- Pellets of Hops
- Specialty grains, used for specific flavors (based on your recipe; these are normally included in kits)
- Yeast for fermentation
This was a list of the basic additives needed for your home brew. As stated earlier, while ingredients are important for the right flavor, sanitizing your tools is just as, if not more, important than the ingredients as it can throw off flavor.
So you have a list of the most commonly used ingredients. Next, you need to know which equipment that you will need in order to brew your own beer. First of all, you will need a brewing pot for brewing. This is where you boil water, heat the malt and add in the hops. You will need a separate container to place the non-fermented beer, or wort (pronounced wert). This will require a large container, as most batches of home brew are a minimum of 2.5 gallons. In this wort container, you add the yeast. Lastly, you will need bottles for placing the finished product. In these, you place the fermented beer for a period of time to age.
Fermentation takes 7 to 10 days, approximately. After that, when you transfer the fermented beer on the bottles, it will stay there for another 7 to 10 days before you could actually taste the sweet success of your home brewing activity.
