New Kitchen Gadgets Make The Italy’s Oldest Cookie Quick To Make

    By Alicia Contadino | July 30, 2010

If you have Italian heritage, you are likely already knowledgeable about the pizzelle. This waffle cookie is principally eaten during the Easter and Christmas season, but they are becoming more popular year round. This is because new kitchen appliances make them a quick and easy sweet. The old fashioned way of baking them was to have a specialized waffle iron called a pizzelle iron over the kitchen range. They could be made one or two at a time. These are pretty large cookies, with a snowflake pattern on them. Their normal size is five inches.

If you are going to make these from scratch, you’ll need flour, sugar, eggs, and butter, margarine, or vegetable oil. You’ll also want flavoring. Familiar flavorings include anise, vanilla, lemon zest, chocolate, cinnamon, and orange. If you are missing the time or desire to cook but still want them fresh, you can always buy a mix. In some supermarkets, you can get already cooked pizzelles.

If you haven’t heard of them, you might be familiar with one of the similar cookies or its other names. It is usually called the pizzelle, but it is called cancelle and ferratelle. If you have read about ancient Roman desserts, you might know of the crustulum which the pizzelle is based on. Norway has a similar cookie called the krumkake.

How you make them will affect what they are like. Most people prefer them to be slightly crunchy. In some cases they will be sort of firm, but others love them when they are soft and chewy. The normal shape is flat and round, but a wooden dowel can be used to roll them into a cone as soon as they are finished. A filling such as cannoli cream is then added. If you don’t own a dowel, you can choose to place the filling between two pizzelles and make a sandwich cookie.

While they can be prepared year round, they are mostly known for special occasions. These include the Christmas season and Easter weekend. Italian marriage ceremonies are also a common place where these are found. However, since technology makes it simpler to cook fresh ones at home with little effort, they are gaining popularity as a treat that can be consumed at any time.

Although you will usually find pizzelles in Italian homes, they are becoming more known elsewhere. Because of this it is frequently easy to find them in nearby grocery stores. If you can’t purchase them near by, take advantage of the numerous marketers on the internet. While they are convenient to buy prepackaged, little is better than having them made fresh.

People of every level of cooking experience can make these at home with a pizzelle cookie baker. To learn more about the best selling brand, read about the Villaware Pizzelle Iron.
